Week 2 Foundation Scriptures:
1 Timothy 4:7-10, 12-16 7 Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths. Rather train yourself for godliness; 8 for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come. 9 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe....
...12 Let no one despise (look down on) you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity. 13 Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. 15 Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress. 16 Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.
*Titus 2:12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.
4 Takeaways:
1. WE NEED TO "TRAIN FOR GODLINESS"
GODLINESS doesn’t just happen.
It doesn’t happen just because we are SAVED.
It doesn’t happen just because we PRAY.
It doesn’t happen just because we FAST.
It doesn’t happen just because we GO TO CHURCH.
It doesn’t happen just because we ATTEND BIBLE STUDY.
It happens because of “TRAINING”.
GODLINESS is TAUGHT and LEARNED and EXHIBITED; EXPRESSED; MANIFESTED (PUBLIC DISPLAY).
2. GODLINESS HAS AN APPEARANCE
...the way that someone or something looks; an act of becoming visible or noticeable; an arrival
GODLINESS is SEEN...perceived with the eyes; discerned visually; noticed, picked out, DISTINGUISHABLE, identifiable, recognizable, detectable, MARKED
It will be OBVIOUS: easily perceived; plain to see, evident, apparent, marked, distinct, noticeable, perceivable, visible, discernable, observable, tangible, recognizable, unmistakable, MANIFEST
3. GODLINESS IS MANIFESTED IN 5 AREAS OF OUR LIVES
IN OUR SPEECH: communications (the things that use our words for; talk about)
IN OUR CONDUCT: behavior (the way we behave, our demeanor, actions, ways, practices)
IN OUR LOVE: pleasures (the things that we are passionate about, have a zeal for, and appetite for)
IN OUR FAITH: trust and confidence, convictions
IN OUR PURITY: freedom from adulteration or contamination; wholesomeness
...GODLINESS WILL MANIFEST ITSELF IN ALL THESE AREAS OF OUR LIVES WHEN WE ARE TRULY TRAINING FOR GODLINESS AND COMMITTED TO LIVING GODLY LIVES.
4. TOIL & STRIVE
...to work extremely hard and make great efforts to achieve or obtain something
GODLINESS is something that is ACHIEVABLE & ATTAINABLE if we are willing to put in the work and effort.
Paul said in verse 10 that "we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God". If you set your hope on the living God then trying for GODLINESS won't be a problem. We have been led to believe that “work” is a bad word when it comes to CHRISTIANITY, but “work” is required.
WHY IS THIS GOING TO BE “WORK”?
Because we are “TRAINING OURSELVES TO BE SOMETHING THAT IS IN OPPOSITION OF WHO WE ARE BECAUSE OF OUR SIN NATURE BUT WHAT WE WERE CREATED TO BE”...AND OF COURSE WE CAN’T DO THIS APART FROM THE WORKING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT THAT'S IN US.
To EXEMPLIFY GODLINESS is what we are called to do. Daniel understood this and did so to the glory of God. This is apart of the developing the SPIRIT-OF-EXCELLENCE that we are seeking and is needed in this generation. Train for it and do the work! It really doesn't matter that others may not get it or understand what God is calling you to do, you just be obedient to the call that you received. Others will follow.
