Week 1 Foundation Scriptures:
Hebrews 3:7-19…(ESV)
7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
8 do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion,
on the day of testing in the wilderness,
9 where your fathers put me to the test
and saw my works for forty years.
10 Therefore I was provoked with that generation,
and said, ‘They always go astray in their heart;
they have not known my ways.’
11 As I swore in my wrath,
‘They shall not enter my rest.’ ”
12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. 15 As it is said,
“Today, if you hear his voice,
do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
16 For who were those who heard and yet rebelled? Was it not all those who left Egypt led by Moses? 17 And with whom was he provoked for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? 18 And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient? 19 So we see that they were unable to enter because of unbelief.
*Numbers 12,13 &14
4 Takeaways:
1. When we BELIEVE, we have access (a means of approaching or entering a place; entrance, entry, way in, means of entry) to all of God’s promises.
If we fall into UNBELIEF, we shut off access to God’s promises.
*UNBELIEF: an absence of faith.; atheism, nonbelief, agnosticism, heresy, apostasy, irreligion, heathenism, godlessness, nihilism, lack of faith, skepticism, cynicism, disbelief, incredulity, suspicion, distrust, mistrust, doubt, non-conviction
2. Sin in any capacity is wrong but the SIN of UNBELIEF is DECEITFUL...DECEIVING or MISLEADING.
It’s DECEITFUL because when you are in a place of UNBELIEF, you don’t realize that your whole being; existence; life; reality; the nature or essence of who you are is altering.
3. UNBELIEF begins to “HARDEN YOU”/your heart towards the things of God including who He is and what He can do.
So when the Holy Spirit says "do not HARDEN YOUR HEARTS", He knows that this is something that we should focus on and something that is in our control. Our UNBELIEF turns our hearts from soft and pliable to HARDENED.
4. There will come times where our BELIEF in who God is and what He has spoken will be challenged and might ever waver.
When that time comes, our job is to “hold our original confidence firm to the end”.
the "original confidence" is the confidence we had when we first BELIEVED the word of God and put our confidence in Him...that's we have to “hold” on to.
Again, this is a call, a warning, a word of advice to us, the people and children of God and this EXHORTATION is so that we don’t fall into UNBELIEF.
Understand that God is simple in His request of His people and children and it’s just simply BELIEVE; ACCEPT HIS WORD AS TRUTH, TRUST IN IT, and PUT CONFIDENCE IN IT.
When we BELIEVE we are OBEDIENT and when we fall into UNBELIEF we are DISOBEDIENT and DISOBEDIENCE will keep us out of God's promise land.
All God asked the children of Isreal to do was BELIEVE what He said when He said that He was “giving the Israelites the land of Canaan” and that they would "possess the land"; the land that was flowing with milk and honey (Numbers 13:2, 27).
They choose not to BELIEVE which led to their DISOBEDIENCE (in not “going in and possessing the land) which was brought on by fear of what was reported by others who didn't BELIEVE.
Joshua and Caleb BELIEVED in the LORD when the rest of the Israelites spies refused to do so (Numbers 14:11) and reported as such. They were doing what the writer of Hebrews encourages us to do; EXHORT one another. So let us be our generations Joshua and Caleb and always have a "good report", a report based on the word of the LORD. A report that is filled with BELIEVE in who God is and what He is capable of doing. Remember that with God 'ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE" to them that BELIEVE.
