Week 1 Foundation Scriptures:
1 John 1:1-4…(ESV) 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our/your joy may be complete.
*Philippians 2:15&16... 15 so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and perverse generation, in which you shine as lights in the world 16 as you hold forth the word of life,...
James 4:4 You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
4 Takeaways:
1. When we “hold forth the word of life” (have it, apply it, observe it and attend to it) the result is that we will shine as bright lights in this crooked and perverse generation.
The key is the willingness to "hold forth the word of life"; the word of God and Jesus the Son of God throughout our lives. As we come and go. In the city and in the field. Having the word of life, applying it to our lives, observing it (practicing it) and attending to it will cause us to "shine bright in this crooked generation".
2. When our lives reflect that we "have fellowship with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ" our EXHORTATION of “save yourselves from this crooked generation” will be stronger in persuading them to “have fellowship with us too”.
Our lives must testify to the fellowship we have with the Father and His Son Jesus. Our lives must testify that we ourselves have been saved (delivered from) this crooked generation) so that when we EXHORT others to do so they will be able to look at us and see the distinction in our way of living versus theirs.
3. Understand that it’s not just about the EXHORTATION of “save yourself from this crooked generation” but also the PROCLAMATION of “have fellowship with the Father and His Son" and those of us who have it as well.
Our Heavenly Father doesn't just want people to be saved from the crooked generation and go on about their lives. He wants them to do so that they can come into "fellowship" with Him and His Son and we His children and people. This is the ultimate goal of God for mankind. This is why He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have ETERNAL LIFE; FELLOWSHIP.
4. The EXHORTATION of “save yourself from this crooked generation” and PROCLAMATION of “have fellowship with the Father and His Son" is so important because those who are engaging in the ways and things of this crooked generation may not “know” that because of their involvement in it, they are making themselves an enemy of God.
To be a friend or in fellowship with the world (the crooked generation) makes one an enemy or have enmity with God; but many who are doing so do so unknowingly. Many don't know that their conduct is something reflects a direct opposition towards God. Many don't know that their actions are causing them to show a direct hatred towards God. The word of God makes this plain but unfortunately many don't know. Many of whom who call themselves Christians and believers. Many of whom who say that they know God.
Therefore, the EXHORTATION and PROCLAMATION that we are to give brings understanding and clarity to it. Now they have heard it and can make a conscious decision to continue in it or change their course of life. This is for both those who have never been saved and the backslider.
